Melatonin and SSRI antidepressant: interaction, severity and spacing

| Type | Nutrient–drug interaction |
| Severity | Mild |
| Required spacing | None specified |
| Onset | At the time of dosing |
Mechanism
Melatonin is metabolised partly by CYP1A2 and can modestly raise SSRI levels; sedative effects may also add.
What to do
Low doses of melatonin are generally tolerated. Start at 0.5-1 mg and discuss with your prescriber.
How to fit both into one day
Melatonin
pre-bedempty stomach
Melatonin is a circadian signal, not a sedative. Take 30-60 minutes before your target bedtime and keep the dose low.
Putting Melatonin in the pre-bed and SSRI antidepressant in the evening satisfies the 0-hour separation without disrupting either one's absorption window.
